Active Safety on the horizon - More to come - Car to Car communications?

Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) Communications is a hot topic with automotive safety advocates. Where we once relied solely upon driving practices such as 'defensive driving'. We now have a plethora of passive safety features like seatbelts, crumple zones, even airbags. We now are seeing more and more active safety technology coming to the forefront. Each manufacturer has the basic ABS, Vehicle Stability Assist, parking sensors etc.
Vehicle-to-Vehicle Communications presents the promise to offer significant safety improvements. V2V is a communications protocol that allows the dynamic wireless exchange of data between nearby vehicles. The automated information exchange is anonymous, vehicle-based data representing position, speed, and location, just for starters. V2V communications will enable a vehicle to:
  • Sense threats and hazards within a 360 degree range of awareness
  • Sense the position of other vehicles
  • Sense the threat or hazard nearby or appoaching objects present
  • Calculate relative risk
  • Broadcast driver advisories or warnings
  • And ultimately to take pre-emptive actions to avoid and mitigate crashes.

The vision for V2V is clear. Each vehicle on our roads and highways will communicate with other vehicles and that this rich set of data and communications will support a new generation of active safety applications. Current estimate are high for the percentage of accidents that could be prevented once the V2V communications is enabled nationwide.

  1. Sounds right, it is my understanding that Vehicle-to-Vehicle Communication technology, or V2V, is already giving new meaning to the word “connectivity.” V2V allows cars to sense each other and warns drivers of potential crashes. I also hear that Honda is taking things one step further.

    Honda is testing Vehicle-to-Pedestrian (V2P) and Vehicle-to-Motorcycle (V2M) tech.
