Preventive Maintenance - A Priceless Practice

Preventive Maintenance

Meet "Million-Mile Joe": We call him that because he just drove his 1990 Accord to an extraordinary milestone: one million miles. Congratulations, Joe. Way to go!
Driving a Honda for a million miles is an extraordinary feat. So how did Joe do it? For starters, he's read and followed his owner's manual and maintenance schedule to the letter. He's also a stickler for fluids, he checked them weekly, switched them seasonally (10W-30 in summer and 5W-30 in winter), and changed them every 5,000 miles. He's been loyal to the same brand of oil and never let it go below a quart low. You know how most people let their fuel go to almost empty? Joe never did. He's also a creature of habit, using only Honda air, oil and fuel filters. Joe never rode heavy on the brakes, and changed the fluid every few years. He's also replaced the fuel pump, both cooling fans and the radiator twice. Besides his fastidious maintenance, Joe's Accord made it to one million miles because he's loved it. He's treated it with respect and always drove it responsibly. In fact, Joe has only gotten one speeding ticket in a million miles—that must be some kind of record. When it comes to driving, Joe's the man.

"G-Design Shift", a new coordinated control system for shift transmission, throttle, and hydraulic control responds quickly to driver demands and realizes an exhilarating, sporty drive with superior acceleration.
In the mini-vehicle class, a control mechanism and innovations in axle placement to reduce the engine size lengthwise, while a reduction in parts by simplifying the transmission casing structure helps realize a lightweight and compact body.
For the compact and mid-size classes, in addition to the reductions in size and weight, transmission efficiency was greatly improved by expanding the ratio range to achieve fuel efficiency improvements of 5%*3 and 10%*3 compared to the conventional CVT and comparable 5ATs, respectively.
4. A two-motor hybrid system which realizes top-of-industry efficiency*1.
A two-motor hybrid system featuring top-of-industry efficiency*1 enhancing driving performance and reduced CO2 emissions has been newly developed.
Special lithium-ion battery and charger is employed to enable mounting on plug-in hybrid vehicles.
Mid-sized vehicles equipped with this system are scheduled to begin production, starting with the plug-in hybrid model in 2012 and the hybrid model in 2013.
Three driving modes allowing for top-of-industry efficiency*1 for various driving environments were developed; an "EV driving mode" for urban environments, a "hybrid driving mode" using electricity generated by the motor, and a "engine-connected driving mode" where the engine and tires are mechanically connected during high-speed cruising.
Combination with a high-output 120kW motor allows for superior environmental performance and driving enjoyment.
5. A high-efficiency, high output electric SH-AWD hybrid system which combines superior driving and environmental performance.
A new hybrid system, electric SH-AWD, was developed for large-sized vehicles. By combining a 3.5L, V6 engine with this hybrid system, acceleration equivalent to V8 engines, as well as fuel efficiency equal or superior to in-line 4-cylinder engines were realized.
An electric 4WD system with independent 20kW+ motors on both sides for the rear wheels combines a 7-speed dual clutch transmission system with a built-in 30kW+ high-efficiency motor with the engine.
By mounting a high-performance lithium-ion battery and optimally controlling the front and rear motors, a new hybrid system with high fuel efficiency and output was realized.
By mounting two independent motors in the rear and employing a newly developed bilateral torque adjustable control system, incredibly tight cornering just like driving "on-the-rail" is realized. With this mechanism, Honda strives to provide a stable ride for various driving environments.
6. A compact, high efficiency electric powertrain for EVs.
Thanks to the high efficiency coaxial motor, low-friction gearbox and electric servo brake system, the system realizes the highest electrical consumption capability in the world*1, meeting the required AC consumption rate of 29kWh/100mile(116MPGe) as set forth by the United States.
A traveling distance of 123 miles*2(LA-4mode: unadjusted) or 210km*2(JC08 mode) was achieved thanks to the mounting of a high capacity lithium-ion battery.
When using the 240V U.S. electric source, a full charge takes less than 3 hours. (From the time a low-charge signal is lit till full charge)
By offering three driving modes (SPORT, NORMAL, ECON), the driver can freely select from a number of options to meet the needs of various driving styles such as power-saving or sporty drive.

Honda to Debut 2012 CR-V, 2013 Fit EV at LA Auto Show

Oh Yes! This 2011 Honda CR-V Concept
(what we expect to see as the 2012 CR-V)
may be exactly what we've all been waiting
for!!!

Honda has kept things simple and clear with their debuts at this year’s Los Angeles Auto Show, schedule for next month. At the event, the Japanese automaker has promised to bring not only the 2012 CR-V, but also a production version of the 2013 Fit EV, which also made its debut in concept form in LA last year.

“With a new design—both inside and out, new features and new possibilities, the 2012 CR-V will set a new standard for the class,” Honda says on its official website. “As a top-selling crossover for over five years, expectations for the 2012 CR-V are high and we're confident they will not only be met, but exceeded. Much more will be revealed over the next several months.

"The body of the new CR-V will see much more aggressively shaped than the previous generation, but the biggest changes have to be what’s happening under the bonnet and on the inside. The US engine range will see a new 2.5-liter four-cylinder being introduced, while a third bench should be introduced, making room for seven people, thanks to "a more accommodating and spacious design."The CR-V will still be offered with a 2.4-liter gasoline engine, but according to recent spec sheets the power has dropped slightly from 180 hp to 175 hp. As for the new 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that will churn out 201 horsepower in the 2012 Honda model. Like the much criticized new Civic, the CR-V will keep offering a five-speed automatic instead of newer six-speed units that are leading the industry. As for the Fit EV, which should enter production next year, it will be powered by a lithium-ion battery and a version of the electric motor used in the automaker's FCX Clarity fuel cell vehicle. The range should be 100 miles (160 km) and the car will be able to reach a top speed of 100 miles per hour (160 km).

2012 Honda Pilot Debuts with Sleek New Look, Improved Fuel Economy and Upgraded Interior Features

25 mpg Pilot 2WD achieves top highway EPA rating for an eight-passenger SUV

2012 Honda Pilot

The Honda Pilot eight-passenger SUV receives a wide range of upgrades for 2012 with a sleeker front-end design, enhanced interior features and an EPA highway fuel economy rating of 25 mpg on two-wheel-drive models, an increase of 2 mpg compared to 2011 models.

The new styling for the front fascia, with its three-bar chrome-style grille, conveys a more sophisticated crossover SUV appearance. Interior styling changes focus on instrument panel refinement and a more intuitive button layout. For 2012, audio system upgrades on Pilot EX and EX-L models include a 2 GB CD-Library (CD-L) and Bluetooth® Audio Streaming, along with the addition of Bluetooth HandsFreeLink® to those trim levels.

Feature upgrades on the Pilot EX-L include the addition of a full-color 8-inch intelligent Multi-Information Display (i-MID) for audio and vehicle information. Models equipped with the available Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System for 2012 receive subscription-free FM Traffic, 15 GB audio hard disk drive memory (HDD), and a higher-resolution display.

The fuel economy gains for 2012 result from combined improvements to the powertrain, chassis and vehicle aerodynamics. The 250 horsepower i-VTEC V-6 engine includes additional measures for friction reduction and improved efficiency. The 2012 Pilot becomes quieter with additional noise insulation and other enhancements throughout the vehicle.

Body

The 2012 Pilot's new grille and front fascia replace the prior model's six-sided grille insert with a distinctive three-bar horizontal design. Reconfigured multi-reflector halogen headlights and turn signals contribute to the new look with a layout that relocates the turn signal from an outboard position to an inboard position within the headlight housing. A new front air dam and optimized strakes (the rectangular air deflector in front of the wheels) help reduce frontal area and unwanted air turbulence, both of which impact fuel economy. Rounding out the exterior design changes, Pilot EX and above models receive an all-new five-spoke, 18-inch aluminum alloy wheel design (plus 1-inch compared to the previous model). Pilot Touring alloy wheels feature an exclusive six-spoke design with a high-contrast machined surface. Pilot LX models are equipped with 17-inch styled-steel wheels.

Exterior dimensions for 2012 are similar to 2011 with identical measurements for width (78.5 inches), height (71.0 inches for Pilot LX and 72.7 inches for Pilot EX, EX-L and Touring) wheelbase (109.2 inches) and track (front 67.7 / rear 67.5 inches). Overall length increases 0.5 inches to 191.4 inches as a result of the front styling changes. Ground clearance is basically the same at 7.97 inches, down slightly from 8.00 inches in the previous model.

Interior

Interior styling changes are designed to increase refinement throughout the cabin while also enhancing the intuitive nature of the controls. The instrument panel uses a more unified color theme with less contrast between panels. A glossy black center panel for audio controls replaces the high-contrast silver panel of the previous model. Speedometer and tachometer gauge faces incorporate a new look with distinct segments surrounding each meter's perimeter, along with white background illumination for nighttime driving instead of the previous model's aqua-blue background illumination. The redesigned center stack adds a subtle U-shaped character line and different textures to create a layered effect on the panel. Ideal for phones and audio players, a larger center storage pocket is 0.4-inches taller. A simplified layout for the climate controls replaces some of the buttons with dials for a more intuitive, easy-to-use overall design.

The top of the center stack on each Pilot model contains a unique display that varies by model. Pilot LX and EX models contain a three-line display. Pilot EX-L models for 2012 (without navigation) receive the new i-MID, which provides a convenient platform for integration of vehicle information and compatible personal electronics through a color LCD screen and intuitive steering wheel controls. The Pilot EX-L rearview camera display appears in the i-MID and includes guidelines for judging parking distance. The i-MID also shows HandsFreeLink® operation, user-loaded wallpaper such as photos, a fuel-economy display and an audio interface.

Available on Pilot EX-L and standard on Touring, the 2012 Pilot adopts the latest version of the Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System™2. Now with 60 GB of total system memory (includes 15 GB allocated for user media) and voice recognition for three languages, this system uses multiple global positioning satellites covering all of the U.S. including Alaska and Hawaii, as well as Canada and Puerto Rico. Its new FM Traffic feature provides free, continuous updates on traffic and incidents, helping drivers avoid gridlock. The hard drive can store thousands of minutes of music, which is accessible by simple voice commands using the Song By Voice™ feature. Additionally, 2012 Pilot models with navigation feature a multi-view rear camera (wide view, normal view and top-down view), with the image displayed on the navigation screen for convenient parking help when in Reverse.

Adding to the comfort level of the 2012 Pilot is a reduction in noise, vibration and harshness (NVH). Enhanced body seam sealing around the unit-body connection points, and re-tuned rear suspension sub-frame mounts, result in lower noise levels in the passenger cabin. Other specific NVH countermeasures include body-seam sealants to reduce air leaks, enhanced pillar separators, revised insulation materials and acoustic windshield glass on all models.

The tailgate features a lift-up glass hatch for convenient access to the rearmost cargo area. The model's 18.0 cubic-feet of cargo space behind the third row matches or exceeds the trunk space of a typical large sedan and can accommodate items as large as a mid-size cooler or a folded stroller. For maximum cargo space, the second and third rows fold flat into the floor to create 87.0 cubic feet of storage capacity, while also providing sufficient width for 4-foot-wide items.

The cargo area has a hidden storage well that provides 2.8 cu-ft. of additional space and can combine with the above floor storage area by securing the hinged cover against the seatback. The Pilot Touring also provides a load-supporting cargo net (20 lbs. maximum weight) to further subdivide the rear cargo area.

Key interior dimensions are identical to the previous Pilot model, including front headroom (40.0 in. for Pilot LX and EX, 39.3 in. for moonroof-equipped Pilot EX-L and Touring), second-row headroom (39.8 in.) and rear headroom (38.2 in.), legroom (front 41.4 in., second-row 38.5 in., and third-row 32.1 in.). Passenger volumes are likewise identical (153.7 cu-ft. for Pilot LX and EX, 152.7 cu-ft. for Pilot EX-L and Touring), as are cargo volumes (87.0 cu-ft. total, 47.7 cu-ft. behind second-row seats, and 18.0 cu-ft. behind third-row seats).

Safety

Safety technology includes the Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure that helps reduce the amount of crash energy reaching the passenger compartment and can enhance frontal collision compatibility. Additional safety equipment includes three-row side curtain airbags with a rollover sensor, driver's and front passenger's side airbags with passenger-side Occupant Position Detection System (OPDS), active front seat head restraints and anti-lock brakes with electronic brake distribution and brake assist. Vehicle Stability Assist™ (VSA®), commonly referred to as Electronic Stability Control, is standard on all models. The 2012 Pilot also meets new federal regulations with taller rear head restraints.

Powertrain

Power comes from an advanced 24-valve, all-aluminum engine with "intelligent" Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control (i-VTEC) technology with Variable Cylinder Management (VCM). The VCM system allows the V-6 engine to operate in six-cylinder mode for power and four- or three-cylinder modes for efficiency. Fuel economy improves for 2012 with an EPA-estimated1 city/highway/combined fuel economy of 17/24/20 mpg on 4-wheel-drive models and 18/25/21 mpg on 2-wheel-drive models. Representing a 1-mpg increase in City, a 2-mpg increase in Highway and a 2-mpg increase in Combined, this gives the 2012 Pilot 2WD the highest fuel economy of any 8-passenger SUV and the Pilot 4WD the highest fuel economy for any mid-size 4WD SUV.

Fuel-efficiency enhancements include the application of engine friction-reduction technologies including a plateau-honed engine block, low-friction piston treatments, ion-plated piston rings and 0W-20 oil. Additional fuel economy-enhancing measures include the use of a load-variable alternator and high-efficiency spark plugs. The VCM operation range has also been expanded.

The 5-speed automatic transmission features Grade Logic Control to help maintain the most appropriate gear when going uphill or downhill, thereby avoiding gear "hunting." The available VTM-4 system on Pilot 4WD models adds fully automatic 4-wheel-drive capability. VTM-4 delivers seamless, "decision-free" application of 4-wheel-drive when needed, a key benefit compared to conventional systems. The system also provides a "lock mode" – available when in first or second gears up to 18 mph and activated by a button on the instrument panel – that can deliver the maximum-possible torque transfer to the rear wheels to aid in extraction from extremely low traction or stuck conditions.

Chassis

The suspension is a fully independent system with front MacPherson strut and rear multi-link with trailing arm designs that contribute to responsive driving characteristics for an SUV. The 109.2-inch wheelbase facilitates a smooth ride. A tight turning diameter of 37.9 feet aids maneuverability in tight parking situations.

Chassis improvements that directly improve fuel economy include a variable-displacement power steering pump, low-rolling-resistance tires, and low-drag front ventilated and rear disc brakes. Improved aerodynamics, the front strakes, splash shields and inner fenders, and reduced frontal area also contribute to improved fuel economy.

Models and Features

As with the prior model year, the 2012 Pilot is available in four model choices (Pilot LX, EX, EX-L and Touring), and each is offered in either 2-wheel-drive or 4-wheel-drive configuration.

Pilot LX

Standard comfort and convenience features on the Pilot LX include a front and rear air conditioning system with air-filtration system, keyless entry with simplified operation, tilt and telescope steering column, cruise control, power windows with auto-up/down driver's and passenger's window, power door and tailgate locks, AM/FM/CD stereo system with seven speakers including a subwoofer and Radio Data System (RDS), trip computer, heat-rejecting tinted glass, integrated Class III towing receiver, and more. For 2012, the Pilot LX adds AAC audio file playback capability from data discs to the CD player.

For 2012, the Pilot EX now also features Bluetooth HandsFreeLink (previously exclusive to EX-L with Navi and above models), Bluetooth audio streaming and a new 2 GB CD Library (CD-L) replaces the previous 6-disc CD changer.

Pilot EX-L

Additional Pilot EX-L features include leather-trimmed seating surfaces, heated front seats, 4-way power front passenger's seat, one-touch power moonroof, an automatic-dimming rearview mirror and the availability of either the Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System™2 or the Honda DVD Rear Entertainment System with a 9-inch screen. The addition of either the navigation or the entertainment system also adds a 115-volt power outlet. New for 2012 is the addition of a power tailgate to the Pilot EX-L, a USB Audio Interface, and an intelligent Multi-Information Display (i-MID) with QVGA resolution. The i-MID includes a rearview camera display, iPod album artwork display and a user-loadable wallpaper function.

Pilot EX-L with Navigation

The Pilot EX-L with Navigation adds an upgraded navigation system with higher VGA resolution replacing the previous QVGA display and an internal hard drive that replaces the previous model's DVD-based system. New features include FM Traffic, Song by Voice™, rearview camera with a 3-mode display and a Multi-Information Display in the center of the gauge cluster.
2012 Honda Pilot

Pilot Touring

These traits have previously earned the Pilot multiple awards, including "Best Value of the Year" from IntelliChoice, Edmunds.com's "Most Wanted SUV," and it was named one of Kelley Blue Book's "Top 50 Most Popular Cars." The Honda brand has also won the Edmunds.com “Best Retained Value Award” for Non-Luxury Brands.

The Pilot is assembled from domestic and globally sourced parts at Honda Manufacturing of Alabama in Lincoln, Alabama. Honda R&D Americas designed and developed the Pilot in Raymond, Ohio, and Torrance, California. The 2012 model became available for sale on August 31.

Honda Cars...Back on Track...Some sweet Stuff on the Horizon

There's no question about Honda being a leader in the Global Automotive Market. Next year is going to be a big one in terms of New designs, advances in technology, and the introduction of advanced and refreshing new styling across the board. While the Earthquake set the company back in terms of production, Honda remains at the forefront of that creative/technological curve. The redesigned Civic has trickled into dealership up to now, but inventories will grow swiftly in the weeks ahead. And availability is power in the car industry.

Of the twelve Models that are available globally, the CR-V with be the first to follow the Civic, with a 'new' look and feel this winter. Next to appear will be a redesigned Accord in the spring.

These three models represent 70% of the U.S. Sales, that's huge!

Here's a tidbit of news, rumor has it that Honda has developed a large-car hybrid power train system. This may be introduced as early as next year. So for those that have wondered when our
larger models will be available with a hybrid option....looks like that may be on the horizon.

Here's a summary of what one may expect to see from Honda in the months/years ahead. Let me know if there's anything you've heard, seen or expect.

Fit

  • Hybrid version in Europe only. It's only fair, the Fit aka Jazz in Europe was introduced there five years before here in the States.

  • Redesign due in the summer of 2013

  • Fit EV: this may be the rumored "battery-electric commuter car". Look for it in 2012
Insight

  • Face lift next spring.
Civic

  • Minor setback in production due to the earthquake

  • Natural Gas version in the fall

CR-Z

  • The first Hybrid sports car may benefit for a higher-performance edition

  • A SEMA edition with 200 hp was developed by the Mugen unit last year

Accord

  • Redesigned model in the spring, shorter, narrower track, same wheelbase

  • Back to one 2.4L engine, maybe

  • De-emphasis on the V6, still available

  • A four cylinder hybrid Accord? Maybe?

  • A plug-in hybrid by he end of 2012

Accord Crosstour

  • A four cylinder edition!

FCX Clarity

Hydrogen powered fuel cell technology in The Clarity is in a beta test in Southern California...

Don't look for a production version of this until 2018

CR-V

  • Redesigned for introduction in November

  • Available with a 201-hp 2.4L engine

  • No V-6

  • But maybe a Hybrid

Element

  • No Element in sight...but something like it, Fall 2012

Pilot

  • Minor face lift in the fall

  • Followed by a full redesign in 2013

Odyssey

  • Redesigned and introduced in 2010
Ridgeline

  • Fuel economy enhancement for 2012

  • Discontinued in 2013

  • Maybe replaced with a compact pickup, derived from the CR-V

The Real Deal!....not the Real Steal...

The Honda Accord...the 'One'. The Honda Civic, something for everyone...even car thieves? I heard the rumor a year or so ago, and only now do I have any convincing evidence that it's true. A new report from the National Insurance Crime Bureau found that 1994 Honda Accords were the most stolen cars in the United States in 2010.

The 'Bureau' shows that the 1994 Accord topped the list...and surprisingly the Accord is followed by the 1995 Honda Civic. Wow! Talk about supply and demand! By the way, the Accord has been at the top of the list for the last three years.

Funny thing is, the thieves preferences are shifting somewhat. For the first time since 2002, domestic brands are being favored over the foreign brands. Ford has three slots, Dodge two, and Chevrolet one. When you count the Acura Integra(1994), Honda has Four spots...#1, #2, and #8. I'm amazed. This may just be just another untapped source of Market Research.

The FBI claims that overall automobile thefts are down this past year, about 7.2 percent since 2009. If this is true, this will be the lowest level since 1967.

I don't know all the reasons for the thefts and the reduction overall, some attribute it to the new anti-theft technology that we find in newer cars.

The fact remains...the best deal is a 'Real Deal'...not a 'Real Steal'.

When Times are Tough the Tough Start Giving...

Hendrick Automotive Group is not an organization to brag about it's many contributions to the community. I'm sharing what follows, simply as an example of the fact that some big companies do pitch in locally to help their own. Honda Cars of Bradenton is one of two dealerships that are part of the Hendrick organization here in Florida. We're proud to be associated with the Hendrick Organization! And proud of what they've recently done for a local school district near our Corporate Headquarters.

Earlier this month Hendrick Automotive Group agreed to a $250,000 dollar sponsorship program that will allow Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools to offer a complete program of middle school sports for the 2011-2011 academic year. The District was facing, due to budget cuts, an extreme reduction to the number of middle school sports being offerred.

The Hendrick sponsorship, combined with a contribution fram an unidentified donor, provides the remaing amount necessary to fund the full lineup of 13 sports at all 32 middle schools for more than 6,500 students participating in athletics across that school district. This is awesome. Can't imagine not having sports programs throughout middle school when I was a kid!

The More Things Change...The More Things...Change

Whether you are in the market for a new car or a used car, you'll likely fall into one of several types of buyer categories. Those that focus on price, those that focus on a payment, and those that focus on the 'big picture'. What historically has been called 'total cost of owership', Edmunds calls "Lowest True Cost to Own". Honda buyers are typically quite analytical and while they are concerned with price and payments, they find great solace in this "True Cost to Own". It's a measure that aligns well with a budget oriented approach to the acquistion of a car or any large depreciable investment. So that's the background!

The Headline is: Honda takes Five Top awards, from Edmunds, for low-cost cars...Honda cars won in five categories in the 2011 "Lowest True Cost to Own" rankings, according to Edmunds.

Ipads and Smartphones are in the House(Honda Cars of Bradenton)

Let me know if your shopping behavior is changing. That is, your 'online' shopping behavior. Reports have it, that day after day, more and more consumers are using their mobile device to gather an abundance of information about making their next car purchase.

Are you shopping on your Smartphone or with your tablet?

This was the conclusion that was drawn by Jumptap, a Cambridge, Massachusetts firm that specializes in mobile advertising. This firm also wants to provide value added information to auto manufacturers so that they can target their car-buying more precisely and in a more timely fashion.

Turns out Jumptap did extensive statistical analysis, aka, number crunching, of Internet traffic from comScore. They found that internet traffic to mobile automotive sites is ramping up...not just in a linear fashion...but EXPONENTIALLY!

Historically online auto sites are growing by 30% per year. While Mobile auto site traffic is growing in three digit % figures. Some reports have that figure over 400% year over year.

Personally I know that over the past year my own personal shopping on the internet has grown dramatically...and the percentage of those purchases have been made using my Android phone.

Now I guess I'm just another statistic. What about you?

As far as 'surveys' go....I like this one!

According to a YouGov/BrandIndex survey, the top three most favorable percieved brands among AMERICAN Consumers include two American Automotive firms and Honda! I remember having a hard time buying my first 'import' car. At the time it seemed somehow unpatriotic to do so. How far we've come since then. Honda, in the top three of the most favorable percieved brands among American consumers. I can live with that.

Only In America!!! Good for U.S.!!! Seize the Opportunity!

From several sources it appears that the old saying, "your car will never be worth more than it is today" may be temporarily out of date. In many markets used cars are actually appreciating! It's unbelievable to some and a great opportunity to many. With this, the used car market in on fire! And this is an 'across the board' phenomenon. From High-line used cars down to the bare basic cars that find first time buyers behind the wheel, these vehicles are commanding the highest premium prices ever seen. It just may be the right time to bring your car into Honda Cars of Bradenton so we can professionally appraise it. You may be in a very strong position to make that 'Deal of a Lifetime' that we call the 'Real Deal'.

1,000,000 miles, 1990 Accord..."Go Joe, Go!!!"

There's a guy in Norway, Maine that is driving his 1990 Honda Accord to one million miles.

His name is Joe LoCicero!

We say, "Go, Joe, go!"

This is no ordinary Joe! Driving a Honda to a million miles is an extraordinary feat. It would take the average driver about 65 years to reach one million miles. You may ask, "So how is Joe doing it?" For starters, he's read and followed his owner's manual and maintenance schedule to the letter. He's also a stickler for fluids, checking them weekly, switching them seasonally (10W-30 in summer and 5W-30 in winter), and changing them every 5,000 miles. He's been loyal to the same brand of oil and never lets it go below a quart low.

He's a creature of habit too! You know how most people let their fuel go to almost empty? Joe runs anywhere near empty, never happens. He's also a loyal parts guy, using only Honda air, oil and fuel filters. Joe never rides heavy on the brakes, he changes the fluid every few years. He's also replaced the fuel pump, both cooling fans and the radiator twice.

Besides his fastidious maintenance, Joe's Accord is on its way to a million miles because he's loved it. This is a relationship for sure! He's treated his Accord with respect and always drives it responsibly. In fact, Joe has only gotten one speeding ticket in almost a million miles—that must be some kind of record.

When it comes to driving, Joe's the man. Write Joe an encouraging message...

The Best High Mileage Car for Under $20,000?...Drive one today!

Great News for the 2012 Honda Civic! Turns out USA Today and Cars.com have teamed to evaluate five cars, each seating five passengers and costing under $20,000. Each of these getting over 35 MPG highway. In a series of tests, including a mileage verification test. Reportedly this test spanned a course of over 161 miles. The course was mixed city and highway. We like that!

Not surprising to us, rumor has it the 2012 Civic won, hands down with an average of 36.8 mpg. The Honda Civic bested the 2011 Hyundai Elantra GLS by 2.3 mpg...even though the Elantra has an EPA rating of 33 mpg combined city/highway versus the Civic's 32 mpg.

Those that followed included the 2012 Ford Focus and the 2011 Chevy Cruze and the 2011 Kia Forte.

Cars.com will publish these figures on Monday....for the overall prize as the best high mileage car for under $20,000.

I know who I'm betting on!

Powered by Honda - A Great Trademark Slogan

Here at Honda Cars of Bradenton there's a cultural connection to car racing, notably NASCAR and the Hendrick Motor Sports organization. As we are a part of that Hendrick Family.

If you weren't aware of that organizational connection, you might be surprised when you visit our parts department. They offer an array of NASCAR/HMS promotional merchandise. It's a fact that there's a significant population of Honda Car owners that are also NASCAR fans.

As a Honda Dealership, that connection to racing is also tied to Indy racing. My customer and I had a front row seat in our showroom on Sunday, at least it felt that way. We had the Indy 500 Race on our big screen in the showroom this past weekend. And WOW! what a finish! Did you know that every entry in the Indy 500 is POWERED BY HONDA!!!???

Back to the race:

While it was looking like the rookie driver JR Hildebrand was a virtual sure bet to win it, BAM! suddeny, on the final turn, he slammed into the wall. Unbelievable! If you missed it, check the it out on YouTube.

JR ended up taking a 3rd place finish..hobbling over the finish on two wheels. Dan Wheldon was in the right place at the right time to take the win.

Certainly one of the most dramatic finishes that I've ever seen. And a metaphor for one of life's lessons:

As the saying goes, "it ain't over..." (till it's over?) or "it's not where you start..." (it's where you finish) Ouch!

Honda Odyssey - The 'Ultimate' Minivan - Anybody Surprised?

Cars.com, an online resource for new and used car buyers, announced today that the Honda Odyssey is the winner of its first-ever Ultimate Minivan Shootout. The site took six redesigned 2011 minivans under $45,000 and put them through a series of rigorous head-to-head challenges to determine which one was the best of the pack. The 2011 Honda Odyssey took the title for its styling, comfort and overall ride.

"Minivans haven't always been so cool; in fact, some car shoppers have shied away from them," said Patrick Olsen, Cars.com's editor-in-chief. "The reality is that today's minivans are sleek, practical and drive very well, which fulfills the needs of many families. Looking at the Honda Odyssey, its overall package of innovative features, design and a great ride propelled it ahead of its competitors. The $42,000 price tag might seem steep, but the features that the consumer gets for that money are unbeatable."

Cars.com, USA Today, Motorweek and an Atlanta-area family of five tested the vehicles over a period of three days. The first day consisted of 175 miles of highway driving to determine the true gas mileage for each van. On the second day, the experts took turns driving each of the six minivans evaluating ride, comfort, handling, style and functionality. On the final day, the local family evaluated the minivans from a car shopper's perspective to determine which features and design aspects were most important to them.

"We wanted to put these minivans through real-life tests with input not just from the experts but from a family with children," said Olsen. "This shootout takes into consideration the important insight of what the family thought was a good minivan and which one truly met their needs, because their opinions are important and reflect what all minivan shoppers would want."

Vans tested in the Cars.com Ultimate Minivan Shootout included the 2011 Chrysler Town & Country priced at $40,835, the 2011 Dodge Grand Caravan priced at $34,055, the 2011 Honda Odyssey priced at $42,250, the 2011 Nissan Quest priced at $38,040, the 2011 Toyota Sienna priced at $41,144, and the 2011 Volkswagen Routan priced at $34,750.

Are you a Big Fan of CREATIVITY?...this is it!

Honda's most recent advertising campaign caught me off guard and blew me away. I've been a lifelong fan of anything creative, with some limits. If I find it creative, I stand and I applaud! Be it the new interfaces in the latest Honda Cars, Trucks, Vans and Hybrids, a new gadget, some new automotive technology, or in this case...Advertising. Advertising content is always a source of amazement for me in the realm of Creativity!

So check Honda's latest, fully integrated national advertising campaign for the all-new Honda Civic. The campaign started last month.

It is designed to demonstrates the idea that we are all diverse in many ways, e.g. life-styles, tastes, wants and needs. And here's Honda, stepping up with an answer and a solution for matching us to the right car. There's a unique Civic for each of us. There's a current market trend moving toward product personalization and the Civic is positioned to be the latest canvas for that trend in small cars.

You'll be captivated, maybe repulsed, nonetheless engaged in the TV spots. I was. You'll also be seeing more of the same in publications such as Elle, ESPN the Magazine, Maxim, PARADE, People, Rolling Stone, Time and Wired. There's no escaping the message in the media.

You'll be introduced to five outrageous characters and see the same five characters in all the magazine ads.

This is prologue, this is what we mean by 'making it fun' to buy a car. Stop in and get your photo taken with the lifesize 'characters'...they are all in our showroom, TODAY!

And you may even see the message going out in the theater, billboards, etc.

The theme is "To Each Their Own," there are five distinct characters. Each represents a different Civic model and shows that there's a Civic right for each person,no matter who-or what-you are:

- Cesar, the Champion Luchador, is somewhat of a celebrity. He's handsome, charming and a bit vain so he, of course, appreciates the Civic Coupe's sleek lines.

- The Monster, Teeny, is a bubbly and studious college coed. Her practical nature and frugal budget align with the fuel-efficient Civic HF model.

- The Urban Woodsman, Jack, lives in the city but is at home in the woods. He likes his Civic Hybrid for its great fuel efficiency, which comes in handy on his many trips to the great outdoors.

- The Ninja, Aiko, is cute, innocent and deadly. A martial-arts phenom who's partial to red licorice and arcade games, she pairs well with the high-energy performance of the Civic Si model.

- The Zombie, Mitch, is a salesman who's into high-tech gadgets. His Civic Sedan is loaded with options like Bluetooth HandsFreeLink and navigation system with FM Traffic.

The All New Civic is a seamless evolution, inventive and cool, a succesive refinement. It will turn many to realize that it is well-designed, moderately trendy and technologically advanced.

We've known for a long time about the inherent diversity of Civic drivers, And this Civic will be engaging to each market.

I hope you get a chance to see the commercials. They are absolutley entertaining and do a great job of revealing that there's a Civic out there for everyone.

Background music plays a prominent role in each spot and is provided by several breakthrough artists, including: Snake and Jet's Amazing Bullit Band, McChris, Barry Louis Polisar, The Virgins and Oh Land.

Watch for the TV spots in the broadcast of Modern Family, How I Met Your Mother, NCIS, Vampire Diaries, Bones, Fringe, Chuck, Nikita, The Bachelorette and So You Think You Can Dance.
